Owasso Track Distance Squad Week Sixteen Schedule – 4/1/24 – 4/6/24

Happy Easter!  Sorry for the late schedule.  We had a solid week last week with two meets at Bartlesville and Jenks.  Jenks was CRAZY windy so times suffered but Bella Nelson still managed a win in the 1600m.  On Thursday Ben Campbell won his heat of the 1600m and broke 5:00 minutes for the first time!  Anakin Haney also won his heat of the 800m with a PR time!  We had many other strong performances as well.

I’d also like to congratulate one of our Senior boys, Isaac Krueger, for accepting his scholarship to St. Louis University!  He will attend SLU this fall on a Track/XC scholarship.  Way to go Schmuel!

This week we are deciding on two meets on Friday…either Tahlequah or Jenks.  Our goal is not split the team and the coaching staff if possible.  I will post rosters and the meet schedule as soon as the decision is made.

Thank you for everything you do and as always…GO RAMS!  –  Coach Collins

Owasso Track Distance Squad Week Fourteen Schedule – 3/18/24 – 3/22/24

We had such a GREAT first week of competition!  Union was all over the place regarding weather…cool and windy, lightning delays, hot and humid, then finally perfect…but our runners were awesome through all of it!  We had too many PR’s to count.  Last night, some of our top runners participated in the Texas Distance Festival and again, nearly every runner ran near PR times or had their best race ever.  We’re incredibly proud of the way they competed!

We have several runners gone this week for Spring Break but for the kids that are here, we will have some practice times.  What we tell the runners is if they are in town they need to come to practice, if they are out of town they need to get some kind of run in…competitors will find a way!

If we have any JH distance runners who want to come practice with the HS kids they are more than welcome.

I hope everyone enjoys the break! Thank you for everything you do and as always…GO RAMS!  –  Coach Collins

Owasso Track Distance Squad Week Thirteen Schedule – 3/11/24 – 3/15/24

As so often happens in early March in Oklahoma we had bad weather for our first meet!  It seemed ridiculous that Jenks postponed the meet Friday morning but after freezing our behinds off and getting soaked at practice Friday afternoon I was a little more understanding.  Despite the weather, we have three new members of our Owasso Milers Club!  For practice on Friday, we had a quick inner-squad practice meet with several athletes running fantastic times.  Congratulations to Stella Jones and Gwyneth Collins for breaking 6:00 minutes in the mile for the first time and Ben Campbell for breaking 5:00 minutes in the mile for the first time on the boys’ team!  One of our baseline goals each season is to get as many female runners under 6:00 minutes for 1600m and as many male runners under 5:00 minutes as possible.  Way to go homies!

Fortunately, our Freshman athletes were able to compete last week at Tahlequah on Thursday and they CRUSHED it!  Both our girls and boys 4×800 relays won the meet with the girls’ relay of Audrey Toews, Yaretzy Aguilar-Cardona, Madison Friday, and Bijoux Milien setting a new Freshman record and our boys’ team of Chiles Stover, Nos Graham, Adan Rossini, and Brody Murdock closing on a Freshman record of their own!  Audrey also won the 800m and Yaretzy was the individual champ in the 400m.  We had several PR performances across the board for our freshman team.  Great stuff!

For this week we are taking as many athletes as we can to Union on Thursday.  Again, the weather looks somewhat iffy but they lowered the rain chances today so we’re headed in the right direction.  Information for the meet is listed below.

We have our second FanPledge fundraiser of the year on Tuesday for our HS kids.  We did this way back in XC and had tremendous success.  Once the Track is complete (if you haven’t seen it, things are ACTUALLY happening at the Track now) we’ll be able to take gate and concession money which should eliminate the need for a second FanPledge.  We hope to kick off next year with the FanPledge, followed by the Hog Jog in November, and then use our new Track facility to raise funds in the Spring.  That will mean only three fundraisers all year.  Until then we need to fund this season!  The money from this fundraiser will go towards, among other things, the KU Relays in April and as seed money for XC Camp this summer plus travel meets in the fall.  Last year we took more athletes to out-of-state meets in XC than ever before.  We want to keep that trend going so that as many kids as possible get to participate in big, multi-state races in both XC and Track.  We want our athletes to have the best experience possible while in our programs but it takes funds to make it happen.  The biggest thing we need to make this FanPledge a success is athletes entering their contacts BEFORE we start the fundraiser on Tuesday.  Here is a link with all the information…

Lastly, we have our monthly Booster Club meeting on Tuesday at 6:00 in the Fieldhouse.  All Booster Club members in good standing are welcome to attend.

Owasso Track Distance Squad Week Twelve Schedule – 3/4/24 – 3/8/24

We made it to the start of the outdoor season!  It’s finally MEET WEEK!  We have a freshman meet at Tahlequah on Thursday and a Varsity/JV meet at Jenks on Friday.  Information, including rosters, for both meets is listed below.  Events for athletes are posted on Classroom the week before the meet so athletes can tell you what they’ll be competing in.

As we officially start the outdoor season I want to take a minute to remind parents how we determine which meets our athletes will attend.  We don’t have many opportunities for freshmen to compete against only other freshmen so we’ll utilize those meets specifically for our 9th grade runners as often as we can.  JV and Varsity will be determined by performance at practice and races.  We will not have runners compete at a meet who are failing a class, missing workouts, or who are coming back from an injury or sickness.  We practice to race!  Racing is a reward for those athletes who consistently give their best to the TEAM day in and day out.  Unlike XC where we can take unlimited runners to a meet, spots in Track are limited.  Our most consistent and highest-performing athletes earn those spots.

As is usually the case early in the season, the weather for both meets looks somewhat questionable.  Please remind your athletes to bring plenty of extra clothes and blankets, in addition to their warm-ups, uniform, and spikes.  Right now Thursday and Friday both look to be cool and rainy.  The good Lord delights in testing Track runners every year to overcome a multitude of challenges!

Lastly, it means a lot to your athlete if you are there to support them when they compete.  If you can, come out and support the team and see these runners show off all the hard work they’ve put in this winter.  It’s going to be a blast!

Thank you for everything you do and as always…GO RAMS!  –  Coach Collins

Owasso Track Distance Squad Week Eleven Schedule – 2/26/24 – 3/1/24

We’ve made it to the last week of off-season workouts…next week…WE RACE!  We’ve had amazing workouts with some strangely terrific weather.  I’m really excited to see our kids start getting out and competing against someone other than themselves.

It was good to see so many JH runners out last week as well!  Now that they have officially started practice I will leave it up to Coach Graham and Coach Calip to send out information regarding their schedule so I don’t contradict anything they plan on doing.

Drum roll please…they are starting construction on the Track this week!  There will be temporary fencing going up around the Track and the parking lot.  Our access points are going to change but we plan on still having practice as usual.  The Athletic Department is going to give us information on exactly how things are going to work.  As soon as we know we’ll pass that information along to our athletes and parents.

Lastly, we have our Track parent meeting this Tuesday at 7:00 pm at the 8th Grade Center.  This is for JH and HS athletes.  We’ll go over important information regarding the schedule and gear as well as give parents a chance to meet the coaching staff and ask questions.

Owasso Track Distance Squad Week Ten Schedule – 2/19/24 – 2/24/24

We had an excellent meet yesterday at Washburn University in Kansas! It was a crazy long day but several athletes ran very well. The highlight of the meet was Dane Janowski’s 800m where he placed 3rd and ran a state-leading time of 1:56! Yaretzly Aguilar won her heat of the 400m, Madison Friday ran a PR in the Mile, as did Gabe Baughman in the 800m. It was a nice pre-season meet to help prepare for the start of our outdoor season in a few weeks.

We will have an optional practice tomorrow from 8:00 – 10:00. JH practice will start this week as well. We also have our Fan Pledge fundraiser coming up to raise money for the Kansas Relays and the season. Our parent meeting has been rescheduled (tentative) for February 27th. We’ll send out the exact date as soon as it’s confirmed.

We’re seeing an abnormal amount of foot and calf issues from our athletes at practice. Not sure why but we are working on some additional warm-up and cool-down routines with an extra focus on strength to see if it will help. Our trainers have said they are seeing a lot of athletes with vitamin D deficiencies as well. Please help remind your runners of the three R’s…Rest, Rehydrating, and Refueling. They all need plenty of fluids, calories, and sleep to stay in top form and prevent injuries. You might also consider a multivitamin just to make sure they’re getting everything they need. Please reach out if you have any questions.

Thank you for everything you do and as always…GO RAMS! – Coach Collins

We made it to JH tryouts!  Tryouts will start tomorrow with our 6th/7th grade runners and continue on Tuesday with our 8th graders.  Anyone who can’t make Monday or Tuesday needs to come work out on Wednesday as a makeup day.  Runners must have their Rankone Forms complete and a current Physical uploaded to Rankone.  Athletes must also be in good academic standing in order to participate.  The list of athletes making the team will be posted at school sites later this week and practice will start on Wednesday of next week.  Don’t forget we have our Track Parent meeting on Tuesday of next week as well.

We’ll be taking a few of our HS distance kids to compete in Topeka on Saturday at Washburn University.  We’re planning on leaving at 6:00 on Saturday morning and will return late Saturday night.  I will post the itinerary for the meet tomorrow or Tuesday.

We are working to transition away from the Remind App due to the issues we had in Cross Country.  I will continue to post on Remind until the upcoming Track parent meeting but please sign-up for the SportsYou app for updates for Track this season and XC next season.  I attached a separate document with the SportsYou information.

Owasso Track Distance Squad Week Seven Schedule – 2/5/24 – 2/9/24

Another chill week for our distance kids.  Not much new is happening.  Especially with this nicer than usual weather, February is a great time to get really consistent with training and sleep before we start racing in March and after the ups and downs of December and January.  We have been talking with our runners about finding a balance between working hard to improve their fitness but not so hard that they burn themselves out mentally and physically before race season starts.  Last week was good but I think this week will be even better as they get more efficient with the schedule and the “rhythm” of the week.  Please continue to encourage your runners to get plenty of rest, good food, and hydration so they can get the most out of practice.

We had planned on taking some kids to OU this week for an indoor meet but we had so many drop out we are now looking at taking those who want to race to Washburn in Kansas on Feb. 17th.  I will send that information out as soon as it’s confirmed.  We will have a TEAM Long Run on Saturday morning since we aren’t going to OU.

This will be the last week for our off-season JH workouts.  JH tryouts are scheduled for February 12th and 13th.  We will have a pre-season Parent meeting for Track for HS and JH kids making the team on February 20th.  I attached a separate document with the tryout information.

We are working to transition away from the Remind App due to the issues we had in Cross Country.  I will continue to post on Remind until the upcoming Track parent meeting but please sign-up for the SportsYou app for updates for Track this season and XC next season.  I attached a separate document with the SportsYou information.

Coach Parker posted information regarding gear packs and gear payment for Track on SportsYou.  Make sure you check that out and please let one of us know if you have any questions or concerns.

Owasso Track Distance Squad Week Seven Schedule – 1/29/24 – 2/2/24

THE SUN! I SEE THE SUN!  It’s been a month of Christmas breaks, MLK Day breaks, wind, snow, and ice.  We haven’t had a normal week of practice in a long time but I feel good about this one!  The weather looks great and we’re going to take advantage of it.

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned we spoke with a rep from Garmin about ordering watches for our team.  We’ve spoken with the kids several times but the promo ends on Wednesday so I want to make sure parents have the information as well.  This is NOT mandatory but if any of our runners are looking for a new watch it’s a good option.

The primary reason to use Garmin is they offer an app called CLIPBOARD that allows coaches to monitor athletes’ paces and distances.  It also lets coaches send out workouts and routes specifically individualized to each runner with a Garmin watch.  This eliminates runners from having to fill out a training log (which is like pulling teeth) because the information comes directly to the coach.  It’s intriguing to think we could think about our whole TEAM being synced to the same app with less work for the coaches and athletes.  Runners don’t have to own a Garmin to use CLIPBOARD.  They can enter their runs manually but in order for it to sync automatically they will need a Garmin watch.

If we get 10 athletes who want to order a watch we can get a discount.  Here’s the info…

I’m glad to hear you were able to chat with my colleague, Brett, about Garmin and Clipboard at the Boulder Clinic. We can offer our coaches who use Clipboard 30% off of our fitness products when placing an order as a team. We are also offering a New Year’s deal in addition to the normal, 30% off pricing. Below, I have a short list of our recommended/popular devices and what your current price would be.
